Introduction
The Department of Plant Sciences was established in 2006. It is a teaching and research department of faculty of Biological Sciences and enrolls students to M. Sc., M. Phil and PhD programs. It is one of the largest centers for research in Plant Sciences among all the Universities in Pakistan. Many individuals have research projects funded form Higher Education Commission, Pakistan Science Foundation, Pakistan Agricultural Research Council and WWF. The Department is well equipped with modern research facilities. The major equipment present are IR and UV visible spectrophotometers, Biodiesel kit, Microtome, Digital light microscopes, Shimadzu Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer, HPLC (High performance liquid chromatography), PCR (Polymerase chain reaction) Machines, plant growth chambers, etc. The research programs for M. Phil and PhD degrees are spread over various disciplines, depending on the expertise of the faculty members which are as follows: 1. Plant Physiology 2. Plant Genetics and Genomics 3. Plant Biochemistry / Molecular Biology 4. Plant Taxonomy and Biosystematics 5. Biofuel and Biodiversity 6. Plant microbial Interaction 7. Molecular Plant Pathology 8. Plant Ecology International linkages are established with foreign universities. A very well-stocked Herbarium is housed in the Department with a rich well established Herbarium with 1750000 specimens. Botanical garden of Aromatic and Medicinal Plants is also well established. |
